Two decades ago, on March 2, 2004, the European Space Agency's (ESA) Rosetta spacecraft embarked on an audacious journey that would push the boundaries of human knowledge and technology. Launched aboard an Ariane 5 rocket from French Guiana, Rosetta set off on a 7.9 billion-kilometer odyssey to rendezvous with and study comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, a journey that would offer unprecedented in

Scripps Research scientists reveal how first cells could have formed on Earth

La Jolla CA (SPX) Mar 04, 2024
Roughly 4 billion years ago, Earth was developing conditions suitable for life. Origin-of-life scientists often wonder if the type of chemistry found on the early Earth was similar to what life requires today. They know that spherical collections of fats, called protocells, were the precursor to cells during this emergence of life. But how did simple protocells first arise and diversify to event

Tokyo (AFP) March 2, 2024
Japan's Moon lander has been put back to sleep after it surprisingly survived the freezing, two-week lunar night, the country's space agency said, with another operation attempt scheduled for later this month.
The unmanned Smart Lander for Investigating Moon (SLIM) touched down in January at a wonky angle that left its solar panels facing the wrong way.
As the sun's angle shifted, it cam

Night-shining cloud mission ends; yields high science results for NASA
Friday, 01 March 2024 16:18
After 16 years studying Earth's highest clouds for the benefit of humanity—polar mesospheric clouds—from its orbit some 350 miles above the ground, NASA's Aeronomy of Ice in the Mesosphere, or AIM, mission has come to an end.
Initially slated for a two-year mission, AIM was extended numerous times due to its high science return. While AIM has faced hurdles over the years—from software hiccups to hardware issues—an incredibly dedicated team kept the spacecraft running for much longer than anyone could have anticipated.
On March 13, 2023, the spacecraft's battery failed following several years of declining performance.
