Strengthened collision avoidance system boosts UK satellite safety for LEO constellations

GMV's UK subsidiary has taken a significant step in space safety with the development and deployment of an advanced collision avoidance system tailored for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellations. This new service has played a key role in securing new agreements with the Space Data Association (SDA), an international group focused on promoting safe and sustainable space operations.

GMV's UK subsidiary has taken a significant step in space safety with the development and deployment of an advanced collision avoidance system tailored for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellations. This new service has played a key role in securing new agreements with the Space Data Association (SDA), an international group focused on promoting safe and sustainable space operations.

The new technology was developed in the United Kingdom under the European Space Agency's ARTES programme, with funding and support also provided by the UK Space Agency. Combining internal investment with both European and national resources, the UK subsidiary delivered a robust, scalable and reliable system that bolsters space safety and operational resilience for LEO constellations.

"Our work on LEO collision avoidance reflects GMV UK's commitment to advancing space safety through innovation and through partnership" said Mark Dumville, Chief Executive Officer at GMV's UK subsidiary.

The advanced collision avoidance capability led to GMV being selected to develop the Space Data Association's next-generation flight safety platform, the Space Safety Portal (SSP). Designed to support current and future space missions, the SSP will provide an agile and versatile platform for satellite operators, SSA data providers and agencies, improving international collaboration and reinforcing SDA's central role in Space Traffic Coordination.

"The SSP project exemplifies GMV's strategic vision to integrate innovation, operational excellence and international collaboration in space safety," commented Felipe Jimenez, Head of Commercial Flight Dynamics Division at GMV.

The SDA brings together satellite operators to facilitate the secure exchange of critical flight safety data, supporting efforts to preserve the integrity of the space environment. With over 16 years of operational experience, the new SSP will leverage emerging technologies, modern SSA data and advanced coordination concepts to address the increasing challenges posed by rapidly rising satellite numbers and launch rates.
