ArkEdge Space Inc., based in Tokyo, has confirmed the operational capability of satellite short messaging using compact, battery-powered IoT devices. During the 11th UNISEC-Global Meeting, the company demonstrated how simple ground IoT terminals transmitted short messages to micro-satellites, which were then downlinked to ArkEdge's ground station in real time. This process showcased the potential of satellite-based IoT services for regions lacking terrestrial connectivity.

The system uses low-power, long-range communication modules to collect data from sensors deployed in remote and oceanic areas, relaying information to ground stations via satellite. These tests established the technical feasibility of the method and ArkEdge Space is now preparing international proof-of-concept and commercial missions in Africa, Asia, and South America. The company will continue expanding its IoT satellite constellation to deliver wide-area, continuous data monitoring for communities and industries in developed and remote regions.

At NIHONBASHI SPACE WEEK 2025, ArkEdge Space collaborated with CROSS U and international partners to advance development of the satellite and ground networks, emphasizing efforts in Africa to strengthen connectivity infrastructure. During the event, participants engaged in technical sessions including antenna fabrication, live IoT-to-satellite demonstration, and system exhibits, which prompted new mission proposals for regional applications of the IoT constellation.

The demonstration used the AE-1c satellite. This project received support from Japan's Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in 2021, and has since been promoted by NEDO's infrastructure program, which supports development of standardized 6U satellite buses and efficient mass-production systems.

Building on recent demonstrations and partnership activities, ArkEdge Space aims to deliver advanced services and accelerate global expansion of satellite IoT data solutions. Current proof-of-concept projects focus on integrating satellite and ground sensor data for a geospatial intelligence platform that enables data-driven decision-making. The company continues its work to address connectivity gaps and environmental monitoring challenges, supporting talent development for the future of digital space infrastructure.
