Viasat unveils IoT Nano service for global low-power connectivity

Viasat has introduced IoT Nano, a new satellite-powered connectivity service aimed at providing cost-effective, low-power Internet of Things (IoT) messaging in remote and hard-to-reach areas worldwide. The service, developed in partnership with ORBCOMM, enables two-way communication for monitoring and managing mobile and fixed assets across industries such as agriculture, mining, transport, and utilities.

IoT Nano runs on ORBCOMM's OGx platform, which builds on the earlier IsatData Pro (IDP) system with faster speeds, larger message capacities, and expanded hardware support. Viasat's L-band satellite network underpins the service, offering reliable global coverage. The platform allows businesses to gather more frequent and actionable data, with enhancements that reduce power consumption and operational costs.

Andy Kessler, Vice President of Enterprise and Land Mobile at Viasat, stated: "The IoT Nano service represents a significant advancement in providing flexible, scalable, and energy-efficient IoT connectivity to businesses operating in the most remote corners of the world. By leveraging the enhanced capabilities of the ORBCOMM OGx service and equipping our partner ecosystem with new low-cost modules and service capabilities, we are empowering customers with access to smarter data, more frequently, in more places, at a lower cost."

IoT Nano supports both OGx and legacy IDP modes, enabling customers to transition without abandoning existing infrastructure. It is optimized for low power operation, which can lower hardware costs by reducing the need for large solar panels and batteries. Viasat also offers development support through its ELEVATE partner program and compatibility with a range of ORBCOMM devices.

Dave Roscoe, President of Satellite IoT at ORBCOMM, commented: "OGx delivers faster speeds, larger messages, and lower power usage, all backed by ORBCOMM's proven terminals, network, and field support. We are excited to partner with Viasat to enable solution providers to build and scale IoT applications across industries including agriculture, transportation, maritime, oil and gas, heavy equipment, and mining. The new service aims to meet increasing global demand for scalable and efficient IoT solutions, especially in areas where traditional mobile networks are unavailable.
