BlackSky Technology Inc. (NYSE: BKSY) has secured a multimillion-dollar contract from the Defense Innovation Unit (DIU) to oversee the launch integration of a Gen-3 Tactical GEOINT (TACGEO) satellite. This award builds on earlier U.S. government-funded research and development efforts aimed at advancing space-based tactical intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities. Under this agreement, BlackSky will manage the launch preparation and execution of a Gen-3 satellite on behalf of the customer.

The contract encompasses end-to-end support for the mission, including hardware and systems integration, launch site coordination, mission management, and satellite commissioning.
The TACGEO initiative is designed to enhance the Department of Defense's (DoD) access to rapid, space-based ISR capabilities. Previous phases of the program have demonstrated the readiness and operational value of Gen-3 technology in delivering timely intelligence to warfighters in a range of training and operational scenarios.
BlackSky continues to enhance its satellite constellation, optimizing for greater capacity and flexibility. The incorporation of low-latency intersatellite communications will enable faster response times for high-priority, last-minute tasking missions. Additionally, advanced onboard attitude control systems will ensure maximum operational efficiency.
Unlike traditional mapping methods, BlackSky's system delivers real-time intelligence with automatic detection, identification, and classification of various tactical targets, including vehicles, aircraft, and vessels. The Gen-3 satellites will introduce Short-Wave Infrared (SWIR) imaging, allowing customers to capture imagery through smoke and haze-an invaluable capability for ISR operations.
With improved resolution and expanded spectral diversity, the Gen-3 constellation will provide critical insights across diverse conditions, including nighttime, low-light environments, and adverse weather.
