GITAI USA Inc. (GITAI), a leader in space robotics, has announced the successful launch and mission completion of its in-house developed 16U satellite. The satellite was launched into low Earth orbit aboard SpaceX's Falcon 9 on December 21, 2024, at 3:34 AM (PST). The mission met all three predefined success criteria, earning a "Full Success" designation for technical verification.

GITAI aims to slash the cost of space operations by a factor of 100 through innovations such as robotic satellites for on-orbit services, lunar rovers for infrastructure construction, and versatile robotic arms for space and lunar applications - all developed internally. Since its founding, the company has built a comprehensive system for producing space-grade robotics, including a robotic arm that completed successful demonstrations inside the ISS in 2021 and outside the ISS in 2024.

In January 2024, GITAI broadened its capabilities to include in-house satellite development. This effort culminated in the launch of its 16U SC1 satellite aboard SpaceX's Falcon 9 Bandwagon 2 rideshare mission, marking a new chapter in GITAI's journey toward offering comprehensive on-orbit services.

Mission Success Criteria

The SC1 satellite demonstration achieved its "Full Success" designation by fulfilling three key objectives:

1. Reliable Communication: Successfully established communication between the satellite and GITAI's Mission Control Center in Torrance, California.

2. System Functionality: Verified proper operation of onboard sensors, actuators, and computers, including attitude control via reaction wheels and propulsion-based orbital maneuvers.

3. Data Acquisition: Captured and transmitted high-quality image and video data from orbit.

Demonstration Outcomes

The success of this mission has enabled GITAI to solidify critical capabilities:

1. Developing Robotic Satellites for On-Orbit Services

By pairing its satellite technology with its previously demonstrated robotic arm, GITAI is now positioned to deliver cost-effective on-orbit services. The company is preparing for its next Space Demonstration Experiment (S3) in 2026, featuring a 500kg-class satellite equipped with a robotic arm for rendezvous and docking tests.

2. Producing Space-Qualified Satellite Components

The SC1 mission validated GITAI's ability to produce space-qualified components (TRL-9) in-house. While some SC1 components were externally sourced, GITAI is actively developing critical components - such as propulsion systems, reaction wheels, and star trackers - to reduce costs and improve efficiency by 2025.

3. Acting as a Prime Contractor for Spacecraft

With end-to-end capabilities in spacecraft design, development, launch coordination, and operations, GITAI is now positioned to act as a prime contractor for future missions. This advancement enhances its ability to serve U.S. government and private sector clients.
