Members of the Shenzhou XIX mission aboard China's Tiangong space station successfully completed their second round of extravehicular activities (EVAs) early Tuesday morning, as confirmed by the China Manned Space Agency (CMSA). The EVA concluded at 1:12 am Beijing Time.

During the 8.5-hour operation, astronauts Cai Xuzhe, Song Lingdong, and Wang Haoze accomplished multiple tasks, including installing protective devices to shield the station from space debris and conducting an extravehicular inspection. The astronauts received support from the station's robotic arm as well as ground-based teams.

The CMSA noted that the Shenzhou XIX crew has completed almost half of their scheduled mission in orbit. In addition to their EVAs, the astronauts are conducting a range of scientific experiments and technological demonstrations. The crew will also celebrate the upcoming Spring Festival, known internationally as Chinese New Year, while aboard the station.

In an earlier statement, the CMSA highlighted preparations for the second spacewalk. "The crew members are in good spirits, and the Tiangong space station remains in stable condition. The astronauts will perform their second spacewalk in due course," the agency said.

The Shenzhou XIX crew, which includes mission commander Senior Colonel Cai Xuzhe, Lieutenant Colonel Song Lingdong, and Lieutenant Colonel Wang Haoze, has been aboard the station since their arrival on October 30, 2024. Their first EVA took place on December 17, during which they installed shielding to protect against space debris and inspected extravehicular equipment.

As the eighth team to inhabit the Tiangong station, the Shenzhou XIX crew's mission marks another milestone for China's ambitious space program. The crew is expected to return to Earth in late April or early May.
