China concluded a busy year in its human spaceflight program with the launch of the Tianzhou 8 cargo spacecraft on November 16, marking the completion of the country's 2024 space missions. This year featured several significant achievements, including advancements in orbital science, space station operations, and astronaut training.

April Launch of Shenzhou XVIII

On April 25, a Long March 2F rocket launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in Northwest China, carrying the Shenzhou XVIII spacecraft into orbit. Onboard were three astronauts - Ye Guangfu, Li Cong, and Li Guangsu - who embarked on an extended mission aboard the Tiangong space station.

Their work included maintaining the station's systems, conducting repairs, and undertaking more than 90 scientific experiments. Highlights included research into "space fish farming," investigations into the origins of organic molecules, studies on plant stem cells under microgravity, and experiments to understand how lubricating materials perform in space. These experiments contribute to the broader understanding of biology, chemistry, and materials science in a unique environment, offering potential applications on Earth and future space missions.

October Launch of Shenzhou XIX

On October 30, a second crewed mission took place as the Shenzhou XIX spacecraft launched from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center, also aboard a Long March 2F rocket. The spacecraft carried a new crew to Tiangong, with objectives including a six-month stay at the station and a full crew rotation with the outgoing Shenzhou XVIII team.

This mission involved a variety of tasks critical to station operations. The crew performed extravehicular activities (spacewalks), facilitated cargo transfers, and installed debris protection devices on the station. Additional goals included conducting public outreach and educational activities to inspire interest in space exploration and advancing scientific research to enhance the station's operational efficiency and utility.

Significant Achievements in Human Spaceflight

The two successful manned Shenzhou missions underscored China's growing expertise in human spaceflight. They also demonstrated the importance of long-duration missions, crew transitions, and multifaceted research in advancing space exploration.
