Earlier this year, Nokia's Real-time eXtended Reality Multimedia (RXRM) technology was installed at ESA's 5G/6G Hub at our European Centre for Space Applications and Telecommunications (ECSAT) in the UK. Developed with information technology company CGI and supported by the UK Space Agency, the Hub features a private next-generation satellite network where companies can test and develop 5G and future 6G technologies. This partnership with Nokia explores how space-enabled networks can enhance terrestrial connectivity capabilities.
The RXRM system offers significant advantages over traditional monitoring methods, such as satellite imagery or manual inspection, which can be slow and lack real-time accuracy. By integrating advanced AI with high-resolution 8K 360-degree cameras, the system enables immediate analysis and quicker decision-making, facilitating rapid responses to environmental threats, improved monitoring of critical infrastructure, and potential remote healthcare applications in isolated regions.
The successful demonstrations highlight the transformative impact of integrating advanced imaging systems with 5G networks, paving the way for innovative solutions that benefit society across sectors and set the stage for future advancements in 6G. This initiative is creating practical solutions that improve lives, protect the environment and drive economic growth.
"By integrating AI models with Nokia’s impressive RXRM system, we're demonstrating how space-enabled connectivity combined with on-the-ground technology can support real-time data processing and analysis,” said Antonio Franchi, ESA’s Head of 5G/6G Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) Programme Office. “Through advanced object detection and high-resolution imagery, we can provide immediate insights across multiple sectors – from environmental protection to infrastructure inspection – opening new possibilities for delivering essential services remotely.”
"Nokia RXRM solution empowers AI use cases with essential real-time multimedia input and visualization, ensuring seamless performance in time-critical and real-time business workflows. We are privileged to collaborate with ESA in the creation and enablement of such innovative solutions, driving forward the future of multimedia and AI-driven technologies," said Emre B. Aksu, Bell Labs Fellow and RXRM CTO at Nokia.
