Airbus has secured a contract with the United Kingdom's Ministry of Defence (MOD) to supply next-generation satellite modems for the Skynet military satellite communications network. The agreement is part of the Future Protected Modem Type-A (FPMA) project, designed to enhance the capabilities of the current satellite communication systems.
The new modems will replace the Paradigm Modem System currently in use, supporting the operational Skynet 5 satellites and the upcoming Skynet 6A satellite. These UK-designed, developed, and manufactured modems promise advanced functionality and heightened resilience for military communications.
Barry Austin, Head of Defence Digital Skynet Programme at the MOD, commented: "We are very pleased that following a competition for the future, resilient satellite communications modem for UK Ministry of Defence, that an 18-year contract for design, manufacture and through-life support for this critical capability has been awarded. Building on their long heritage, this new Airbus-produced modem will ensure that the Skynet system continues to deliver world-class Military Satellite Communications to Front Line Commands and our deployed operational personnel worldwide."
The FPMA Modem system incorporates advanced Software-Defined Radio (SDR) technology capable of supporting multiple waveforms, providing highly secure and resilient communications across all major frequency bands, including X-band. The system also supports secure internet protocol (IP) communications and robust waveform adaptability to counter sophisticated threats.
Richard Budd, Vice-President Space Digital Secure Connectivity UK, US, and Asia at Airbus, stated: "This capability allows Airbus to continue to play a critical role in the provision of safe, secure, resilient and sovereign satellite communications capability for the UK, especially relevant in the current and dynamic operating environment. In particular, the FPMA modem enables capability evolution in response to more sophisticated threats and will do so at sea and on the ground. It's a fundamental step towards secure Multi Domain Operations."
Scheduled for service entry in 2026, the FPMA modem will include an intuitive and secure Network Management System to optimize spectrum use and enable effective monitoring and control of associated equipment. Airbus will also provide integrated logistics support and training solutions to ensure seamless implementation.
