A model of China's Haoloong space cargo shuttle is set to be showcased at the 15th China International Aviation and Aerospace Exhibition, known as Airshow China, according to an announcement from the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) on Monday.

This new reusable space cargo vehicle, developed independently in China, aims to reduce the cost of transporting supplies to and from the Chinese space station, AVIC stated.

"Haoloong is a new starting point for the AVIC to give full play to the advantages in aeronautical technologies and in developing commercial aerospace products," said Wu Jiwei, AVIC spokesman.

The statement was made during an AVIC press conference ahead of Airshow China, taking place from Nov 12 to 17 in Zhuhai, located in Guangdong province.

The Haoloong space cargo shuttle was designed by the Chengdu Aircraft Design and Research Institute under AVIC. The AVIC confirmed that the research and development phase for the Haoloong shuttle has commenced, with the design scheme completed and comprehensive engineering development underway.

The shuttle is notable for its reusability and its Earth-to-space transportation capability. It represents a cost-effective solution tailored to meet the long-term cargo transport needs of China's space station, as highlighted by AVIC.

According to AVIC, the Haoloong shuttle is launched using a commercial carrier rocket and is capable of docking with the space station for loading and unloading cargo. Its reusable design enables it to re-enter the atmosphere and land horizontally at an airport, facilitating recovery and reuse in a manner similar to airline operations, thus aiming to minimize mission turnaround time and expenses.

The winged structure of Haoloong enhances reentry efficiency and return conditions, optimizing it for return missions. This configuration supports improved operational opportunities for cargo retrieval.

On Oct 29, the China Manned Space Agency announced the winners of its proposals for a low-cost cargo transportation system, essential for the ongoing operation of the country's space station. The Haoloong shuttle secured a contract for the engineering flight verification phase.

"Space is vast enough to accommodate diversified technical routes from all countries around the world to explore and expand," said Wu during the press briefing.

At the 15th Airshow China, AVIC will present over 260 exhibits, showcasing its expertise across various domains including maritime, terrestrial, aerial, and space technologies.
