Bridgestone Corporation announced a new partnership with Astrobotic Technology to jointly develop a specialized tire for lunar rovers.

With over 90 years of experience in tire development, Bridgestone has created first- and second-generation tire models specifically designed for lunar conditions. The company conducted various tests, including simulations and driving trials, drawing on its expertise in supporting diverse forms of terrestrial mobility. Now, Bridgestone aims to extend this support to space exploration, helping to overcome the extreme challenges posed by the lunar surface. Bridgestone's technical knowledge, particularly from its innovations in motorsports, will be instrumental in advancing mobility solutions on the Moon.

The development focus will be a lunar rover tire designed for Astrobotic's 24U CubeRover. Astrobotic has a long track record in developing lunar rover technology, having received 37 NASA contracts and created six unique rovers over the past 17 years. The 24U CubeRover, comparable in size to a standard kitchen stove, is equipped to provide mobility, power, and communications support for scientific payloads on the lunar terrain. Its sophisticated capabilities include precise steering, adaptive suspension, and long-distance communications-all of which are crucial to navigating the Moon's harsh landscape.

Bridgestone's lunar tire will utilize a skeletal framework of metal spokes, complemented by an elastic structure designed to absorb shocks from obstacles like lunar rocks. This innovative tire design aims to enhance traction and energy efficiency, critical for extended missions. The elastic structure also helps reduce strain on the rover's drivetrain, ensuring smooth maneuvering. In the near term, Bridgestone and Astrobotic will work on qualifying the tire for the rigors of launch and space environments.

This collaboration aligns with Bridgestone's philosophy of co-creation and partnership. Bridgestone is committed to demonstrating its pursuit of excellence, fostering trust, and expanding its presence within the space industry. The joint project with Astrobotic reflects the company's effort to create new opportunities and synergies with international partners in space technology.

The lunar tire development contributes to Bridgestone's broader commitment, known as "Extension: Committed to nonstop mobility and innovation that keeps people and the world moving ahead," as outlined in the company's "Bridgestone E8 Commitment."
