Ramon.Space, a leader in space-resilient computing infrastructure, has entered into a major partnership with Radisys Corporation, a global provider of open telecom solutions, to jointly develop advanced space-resilient 5G Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) solutions. This collaboration focuses on integrating Radisys' 5G Release 17 NTN Radio Access Network (RAN) software with Ramon.Space's space-hardened hardware, paving the way for deploying full 5G gNodeB (gNB) capabilities in space.
This deployment involves placing advanced 5G RAN nodes on orbiting satellites, enabling direct, high-speed, low-latency communication with devices across the globe. These gNBs aim to enhance terrestrial 5G networks by extending coverage to underserved and remote areas, supporting applications from broadband internet and IoT to disaster recovery and industrial operations. The solution's architecture includes Radisys' Centralized Unit (CU) and Distributed Unit (DU) software integrated into Ramon.Space's On Board Processors (OBPs), enabling flexible RAN split options between space and ground stations.
Key aspects of this integrated solution include:
- Advanced Integration: Hardware and software integration enables full 5G gNB capabilities in space.
- Innovative Architecture: The solution supports a flexible RAN split between the satellite and ground platform.
- Cost Efficiency: Standardized 3GPP protocols and space-resilient components aim to reduce space communication costs.
- Future-Ready Solutions: Scalable designs will support diverse applications, including IoT and broadband, while optimizing operational efficiency.
- Comprehensive Offering: A complete hardware-software solution for space-based 5G missions is being developed.
"Ramon.Space is committed to building space-resilient computing systems for satellite communications, and we are pleased to partner with Radisys due to their technical excellence in the NTN cellular market," said Eric Anden, Head of Communication Products at Ramon.Space. "Together, we are poised to revolutionize space-based 5G communications, bringing unprecedented capabilities to a wide range of applications while also enabling new, disruptive innovation into the market."
"This collaboration represents a significant leap forward in the evolution of 5G NTN technologies, paving the way for innovative applications and enhanced connectivity in space," added Munish Chhabra, Head of Mobility Software and Services Business at Radisys. "Using Ramon.Space's hardware with disaggregated software that incorporates standardized 3GPP protocols is a key step in reducing the cost of space communications and opening new use cases. This partnership allows us to combine our strengths and deliver cutting-edge solutions that will transform the future of space-based connectivity."
