Skylo Technologies has introduced satellite connectivity for smartphones powered by the Snapdragon X80 5G Modem-RF System from Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. This new integration brings Skylo's Non-Terrestrial-Network (NTN) to smartphones, enabling direct communication over satellite. This feature supports two-way peer-to-peer text messaging, location sharing, and SOS notifications to emergency services.

The Snapdragon X80 5G Modem-RF System enhances data speeds and performance, improves call connectivity and coverage, and extends battery life for mobile devices. As a core component of 5G connectivity across various sectors - including smartphones, IoT devices, wearables, and automotive - Snapdragon Modem-RF systems provide essential mobility solutions. Following the completion of testing, the Snapdragon X80 is now Skylo certified.

Skylo's Non-Terrestrial Network operates on Mobile Satellite Services (MSS) spectrum, connecting to nine Earth stations through multiple partner constellations, covering over 50 million square kilometers. This ensures that smartphones equipped with the Snapdragon X80 can seamlessly switch from cellular networks to satellite, offering uninterrupted connectivity. Using MSS spectrum allows Skylo to deliver satellite services without requiring carriers to allocate terrestrial spectrum or navigate complex regulatory processes.

Francesco Grilli, Vice President of Product Management at Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., emphasized the significance of the collaboration, stating, "This is an impressive moment for cellular connectivity made possible by the strength of Skylo's pioneering network and Qualcomm Technologies' groundbreaking Snapdragon X80. First, we brought seamless NTN to IoT, and together, we're making significant strides in smartphone connectivity. We are extremely proud of this collaboration with Skylo and look forward to what's possible as we continue expanding satellite access to other industries, like enterprise, automotive, and wearables."

Dr. Andrew Nuttall, CTO and co-founder of Skylo, emphasized the advantages of the partnership: "Our work with Qualcomm Technologies provides smartphone users the peace of mind that comes with satellite connectivity. Qualcomm Technologies has been an exemplary partner, and we look forward to introducing new, exciting satellite integrations into everyday use-cases."
