Plextek continues to strengthen its role in space debris removal technology, furthering its collaboration with ClearSpace and the UK Space Agency. This partnership highlights the importance of the CLEAR mission, which aims to significantly enhance space sustainability and safety.
Chosen as the radar development partner, Plextek remains a leader in innovation and technical excellence. With the rapid growth of the global space industry - exemplified by the launch of over 2,780 satellites in 2023 - the need for effective Active Debris Removal (ADR) is more pressing than ever. The CLEAR mission is set to address this critical challenge by proving the viability of removing defunct objects from Low Earth Orbit (LEO), helping to ensure a safer and more sustainable future for space activities.
The mission's next objective involves the removal of two derelict objects from orbit. A servicer will capture and relocate the debris to a lower altitude, where it will safely burn up in the atmosphere. Plextek's radar technology plays a key role in this operation, enabling the precise tracking and capture of space debris, further advancing in-orbit servicing and promoting long-term space sustainability.
Dr Rory Holmes, Managing Director of ClearSpace UK, stated, "Collaborating with Plextek has been key to the CLEAR mission, where we are marking a significant milestone in our efforts to enhance space safety and sustainability. Plextek's advanced radar technology is crucial for the identification and capture of orbital debris, enabling successful space debris removal."
Plextek's continued involvement with ClearSpace solidifies its position as a pioneer in space sustainability technology.
Looking ahead, Richard Jacklin, Commercial Lead at Plextek, said, "This represents a step forward in our collective journey towards sustainable space operations. Our role in developing advanced radar technology for this project not only showcases Plextek's innovative capabilities but also strengthens our commitment to safeguarding the space environment for future generations."
