Bayanat AI PLC (ADX: BAYANAT), a leader in AI-powered geospatial solutions, and Al Yah Satellite Communications Company PJSC (ADX: Yahsat), the UAE's premier satellite services provider, have successfully launched the nation's first Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) satellite. The launch took place on August 16, 2024, in collaboration with ICEYE, a frontrunner in SAR satellite technology for earth observation, continuous monitoring, and natural disaster management.
The Bayanat-owned SAR satellite, developed in partnership with Yahsat, was launched aboard SpaceX's Transporter 11 rideshare mission from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, USA, facilitated by integrator Exolaunch. The satellite has successfully established communication, and its early operations are progressing as planned.
This satellite launch marks a critical advancement for the UAE's Earth Observation capabilities, forming part of a larger SAR constellation designed to deliver high-resolution, persistent monitoring solutions. SAR technology, an active remote sensing method, illuminates the Earth's surface and captures high-resolution images by measuring the reflected signals. Unlike traditional optical satellites, SAR satellites can produce images regardless of weather conditions or light levels, enabling 24/7 observation. ICEYE's radar system is particularly notable for its ability to cover vast areas while also delivering detailed images of smaller regions, offering enhanced value to its users.
The Earth Observation Space Program underscores Bayanat and Yahsat's dedication to propelling the UAE's space sector forward, nurturing local expertise, and establishing independent satellite data acquisition and processing capabilities. The satellite's successful deployment aligns with the UAE's National Space Strategy 2030, highlighting the country's commitment to innovation in space. This collaboration positions Bayanat and Yahsat as key players in the regional space industry, supporting both national and commercial initiatives.
Hasan Al Hosani, Managing Director of Bayanat, said: "The launch of our first satellite marks a highly anticipated milestone for both our collaborative efforts and for the UAE. This is a triumphant moment for Bayanat and a defining step toward our future as Space42. Inaugurating, our Earth Observation capabilities, including the debut of our SAR satellite constellation, will further strengthen our position as a leader in AI-powered geospatial analytics. Our ongoing partnership with ICEYE, building on our shared ambition with Yahsat, continues to prove invaluable, enabling us to leverage space insights for informed decision-making on Earth."
Ali Al Hashemi, Group CEO of Yahsat, said: "The successful launch of our SAR satellite is a testament to the synergies between Bayanat and Yahsat as we press ahead with the anticipated merger to form Space42. The SAR satellite constellation to be launched over the next 3 years will enable us to expand as a multi-orbit satellite operator, encompassing Geostationary Orbit and Low Earth Orbit satellites while also developing satellite manufacturing capabilities in the UAE. This significant step also solidifies our extensive experience and reaffirms our place as pioneers in the UAE's space sector and a significant player in the global SpaceTech industry."
This satellite launch is the latest development in the ongoing collaboration between Bayanat, Yahsat, and ICEYE. The Earth Observation Space Program, initiated in 2023, aims to build a national SAR satellite constellation, enhancing the UAE's capabilities in satellite remote sensing and Earth Observation. The constellation will deliver continuous data streams for a range of SAR applications, leveraging Yahsat's strengths in satellite operations and Bayanat's expertise in data processing.
The constellation will enable more frequent revisits to the Middle East, providing Bayanat and Yahsat with near real-time, high-definition imagery of regional and global conditions. This strategic initiative enhances the companies' capacity to deliver timely and accurate geospatial data, essential for disaster response, maritime surveillance, and smart mobility solutions.
