Planet Labs PBC (NYSE:PL), a leading provider of Earth data and insights, announced the upcoming launch of its first hyperspectral satellite, Tanager-1, alongside 36 SuperDoves (Flock 4BE). These satellites are set to launch on the Transporter-11 Rideshare mission with SpaceX on Friday, August 16, 2024, from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. The SpaceX launch window is scheduled to open at 11:20 a.m. PT, and the event can be viewed live via the provided webcast link.

Tanager-1 will significantly enhance Planet's data-gathering capabilities by offering over 400 spectral bands, enabling the capture of phenomena beyond the range of human vision. This satellite is a product of the Carbon Mapper Coalition, a philanthropically-funded initiative aimed at developing advanced hyperspectral satellites to detect and monitor methane and CO2 emissions at high granularity, facilitating direct mitigation efforts. Tanager-1 integrates Planet's agile aerospace and small satellite technology with an advanced imaging spectrometer designed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Additional details about the Carbon Mapper Coalition and the Tanager hyperspectral constellation are available here.

The hyperspectral data from Tanager will be commercially accessible to Planet's clients, supporting various applications such as defense and intelligence monitoring, biodiversity evaluation, mineral mapping, and water quality analysis.

Alongside Tanager-1, Planet will deploy 36 SuperDoves (Flock 4BE) to continue its core mission of daily global monitoring. The PlanetScope data, generated by these satellites, is utilized by numerous customers across defense, intelligence, civil government, and commercial sectors to make informed decisions and provide context for current events on the ground.

Carbon Mapper is a nonprofit organization based in Pasadena, CA, dedicated to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by making data on methane and carbon dioxide both accessible and actionable.
