Planet Labs PBC (NYSE: PL), a prominent provider of Earth observation data, announced a substantial contract extension with a US-allied international government agency to supply high-resolution satellite imagery from its SkySat fleet.
"Global customer demand for high resolution satellite data continues to grow, fueled by heightened security needs and increased climate disaster risk," said Will Marshall, Planet's Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder. "Our SkySat fleet provides organizations with a powerful combination of high frequency, low latency, high resolution data, enabling greater understanding of critical events around the world."
The SkySat fleet offers frequent revisits to any location on Earth with imagery resolutions up to 50 centimeters. Over time, these satellites will be succeeded by Planet's next-generation Pelican fleet, designed to enhance revisit rates and image quality while reducing latency, thereby accelerating customer insights. The first Pelican technology demonstration, launched in November 2023, continues to perform well.
"The ability to enable considerably faster alerting of various types of events around the world has the potential to unlock entirely new use cases for customers," Will Marshall added.
Last month, Planet revealed a collaboration with NVIDIA to enhance onboard processing capabilities for the high-resolution Pelican-2 satellite. Utilizing the NVIDIA Jetson edge AI platform, Planet aims to improve the efficiency of its next-generation mission, with Pelican-2 scheduled for launch later this year. This partnership leverages recent AI advancements to deliver faster value to both governmental and commercial customers.
