Space Launch Delta 45's weather squadron forecasts only a 30% chance for good conditions for either launch day, though. Deep tropical moisture is expected to remain over Florida this week, increasing afternoon storm chances with the threat of lightning near the launch site.
Two of the three boosters on the rocket will attempt a recovery touchdown back at nearby Cape Canaveral Space Force Station's Landing Zones 1 and 2, which could mean one or more sonic booms may be heard across the Space Coast and into Central Florida. The center core booster will crash into the Atlantic with no recovery planned.
The GOES-U satellite is the 19th Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) satellite launched since 1975, and will inherit the name GOES-19 once it makes it to space. It's the fourth and final of what is known as the GOES-R series that first launched in 2016.
"The GOES-R series creates a full disk (view) of the Earth every 10 minutes," said National Weather Service Ken Graham. "So our weather service meteorologists often request enhanced scanning of rapidly evolving storms."
GOES-16 is the satellite that currently looks at the Atlantic. GOES-16 will retire from that role once GOES-U (soon to be GOES-19) is in place at 22,000 miles above Earth before the start of the 2025 hurricane season.
The spacecraft also has a new space weather tool, a sun-facing instrument targeting coronal mass ejections such as those that bombarded Earth with geomagnetic storms in May and pose a threat to the nation's electrical and communication grids.
"NOAA satellites are the backbone of our country's plan to become a space-weather-ready nation, and we look forward to this extraordinary historical GOES-U launch getting us closer to the types of measurements we need on a continuous basis to be responsive and resilient to space weather events," said Elsayed Talaat, director of NOAA's Office of Space Weather Observations.
GOES satellites have a lifespan of at least 10 years, but some have survived as long as 40 years in space. NOAA won't have replacement satellites until at least 2032.
If it does fly, it will be the first launch of Falcon Heavy since Dec. 28, 2023, when it took Boeing's X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle to space.
That was the fifth launch in 2023 for the rocket, which is essentially three Falcon 9 boosters strapped together that can produce 5.1 million pounds of thrust at liftoff, the most powerful rocket available for regular use on the market.
The rocket was used for commercial and military flights last year, flying its first NASA mission in 2023 as well, launching the deep-space probe Psyche headed to a metal-rich asteroid named Psyche beyond Mars. It has its second NASA mission lined up for October with the planned launch of the Europa Clipper spacecraft headed to explore Jupiter's icy moon Europa.
The rocket first flew in 2018, sending up Elon Musk's Tesla on a trip out past Mars. It only flew two more times in 2019 before taking more than a three-year break, but then began launching regularly beginning with SpaceX's first Falcon Heavy mission for the Space Force in fall 2022.
It would be SpaceX's 65th operational mission of the year including launches from California, and 44th from the Space Coast. That doesn't include the company's two test flights of its in-development Starship and Super Heavy rocket from Texas.
Over time, SpaceX plans to replace its Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy rockets with Starship and is pursuing launch sites at both KSC and Cape Canaveral for the next-generation rocket.
