NASA and SpaceX have confirmed the GOES-U (Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite U) mission is ready for launch following a successful readiness review at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
The launch is scheduled for a two-hour window beginning at 5:16 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, June 25. A SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket will carry the satellite into orbit from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center.
Cape Canaveral Space Force Station's 45th Weather Squadron predicts a 30% chance of favorable weather conditions for the launch. The main concerns are the Cumulus Cloud Rule, Anvil Cloud Rules, and Surface Electric Fields Rule.
The GOES-U mission is the latest in the GOES-R series of advanced weather satellites managed by NOAA. This series enhances weather forecasting and environmental monitoring. The GOES-R program is a collaborative effort involving NASA, NOAA, and other key partners, including the National Weather Service and various academic and research institutions.
GOES-U, like its predecessors, will provide critical data for weather prediction, severe storm tracking, and space weather monitoring. These satellites are instrumental in improving the accuracy of weather forecasts and contributing to public safety.
The satellite was built by Lockheed Martin, continuing the company's role in developing the GOES series. The advanced instruments on GOES-U will help monitor atmospheric conditions, track wildfires, measure lightning activity, and observe space weather phenomena.
