The Space Information Sharing and Analysis Center (Space ISAC) has successfully conducted a tabletop exercise titled "Saving Selene: Walking on the Moon" at the 2024 CYSAT conference in Paris. The exercise aimed to enhance proactive measures in space security by simulating a space-based mining and manufacturing crisis set in the year 2030.
The exercise scenario centered around a semi-permanent mining facility and an orbital processing plant for extracting rare Earth minerals from the lunar surface. It brought together investors from various nations, reflecting the collaborative and complex nature of the global space industry.
Participants, who came from diverse professional backgrounds, engaged in discussions designed to stimulate innovative thinking and foster cooperation. They explored various security challenges within the space sector, sharing insights that could contribute to future strategic developments.
Nick Reese, Co-founder and COO of Frontier Foundry, played a crucial role in shaping and implementing the exercise, ensuring its relevance to current industry challenges.
Erin Miller, Executive Director of Space ISAC, emphasized the importance of such exercises, stating, "Space ISAC's ability to provide and host global leaders in a dynamic public-private, cross sector, space systems crisis exercise is paramount to collective defense. Space ISAC is well poised to offer more tabletop exercises this year. The growth of our offering underscores our unwavering commitment to our mission to facilitate collaboration across the global space industry."
Nick Reese commented on the outcomes of the exercise: "In this exercise, we sought to identify gaps in our ability to respond to incidents in space, beyond LEO. Thanks to the hard work of the entire team, we've learned so much and we can get to work turning these lessons learned into actions that will improve the safety and resilience of cislunar space."
Looking forward, Space ISAC is committed to expanding these collaborative efforts, aiming to drive innovation and address significant challenges within the space sector.
