Hughes Network Systems, LLC (HUGHES), an EchoStar company (Nasdaq: SATS), has opened a new manufacturing facility and private 5G incubation center in Germantown, Maryland, emphasizing the company's commitment to innovation and local development.

The facility, named the Hughes Manufacturing Facility (EXM), is responsible for producing U.S.-made hardware essential for various networks, including the Hughes HT3000W JUPITER System satellite modem and the Hughes HL1120W Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite terminal. The EXM, staffed by approximately 400 engineers, technicians, and manufacturing personnel, employs advanced robotics to produce satellite modems and terminals. It also acts as a testbed for emerging private 5G solutions aimed at enterprise applications and secure 5G networking for the U.S. Department of Defense.

"Hughes has deep roots in this community. Our capabilities evolved from a long-ago startup in Rockville, Maryland, and we have grown into what is now the leading provider of broadband satellite services, products, and managed network solutions," said Paul Gaske, COO, Hughes. "The EXM facility allows us to continue a proud tradition of designing and manufacturing leading edge products here in Maryland."

Situated within the Pinkney Innovation Complex for Science and Technology at Montgomery College, the 140,000-square-foot facility is the first-ever manufacturing space on a U.S. community college campus. It offers educational programs and training for students, including internships and mentoring opportunities with Hughes engineers.

Hughes, recognized as a significant satellite technology and managed service provider to government and defense sectors, will leverage this facility to provide the U.S. Department of Defense with secure domestic manufacturing capabilities.

"The opening of EXM solidifies our dedication to technological innovation, engineering expertise, and fostering the next generation of industry leaders," said Hamid Akhavan, President and CEO, EchoStar. "The products imagined, designed, and fabricated in this building further advance our mission of connecting everyone, everywhere."
