Planet Labs PBC (NYSE: PL), a leading supplier of daily Earth observation data, has reported a multi-year data-license contract with Carbon Mapper, Inc. Under this $20 million deal, secured through initial backing from leading climate philanthropy, Planet will supply Carbon Mapper and its affiliates with vital hyperspectral imagery until the year 2030.
This collaboration not only strengthens their ongoing partnership but also enhances the Tanager hyperspectral satellite project-a venture Carbon Mapper has significantly contributed to. The extended agreement underscores both entities' commitment to mitigating global methane and carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions through improved monitoring.
Riley Duren, CEO of Carbon Mapper, expressed optimism about the partnership's future impact, highlighting the arrangement as foundational for the Tanager satellite constellation's growth. This expansion aims at making methane and CO2 emissions more visible and actionable through Carbon Mapper's public data portal. "The reinforced alliance with Planet positions us to offer unparalleled methane and CO2 data to policymakers worldwide," Duren remarked.
Mark Keremedjiev, Mission Director for the Tanager Hyperspectral Mission at Planet, shared his enthusiasm for the project's potential to revolutionize methane emission tracking on a global scale. "With the upcoming launch of the first Tanager satellite in 2024, designed to capture detailed hyperspectral images, this agreement ensures our capacity to provide critical data for combating climate change over the long term," he said.
This contract renewal, extending from 2026 through 2030, signifies an augmentation of the original data-license pact between the two parties. The Tanager constellation's capabilities extend beyond environmental monitoring to address diverse needs in commercial, civil, and defense sectors, showcasing the breadth of applications for its hyperspectral data.
