BlackSky Technology Inc. (NYSE: BKSY) has been awarded a significant $24 million contract by the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) to enhance moving target engagement capabilities through development and demonstration. The contract showcases BlackSky's innovative approach to integrating artificial intelligence (AI) with satellite technology for improved detection, tracking, and identification of moving targets globally.

Brian E. O'Toole, CEO of BlackSky, highlighted the company's pioneering software and AI methods as crucial for advancing space-based commercial moving target technology. According to O'Toole, "BlackSky's AI-driven solutions are set to significantly expand the capabilities of commercial satellite technology, providing unprecedented speed and accuracy in moving target engagement."

The project will leverage the BlackSky Spectra platform, incorporating both BlackSky's proprietary data and that sourced from third-party providers. This initiative aims to showcase the impact of AI and machine learning on enhancing tasking processes, multi-source intelligence collection, and automatic target recognition within a simulated operational setting.

O'Toole further stated, "The optimization of BlackSky Spectra for use in environments with limited resources is a testament to our commitment to innovation. This project will demonstrate our ability to integrate diverse data sources, including government and commercial intelligence, to deliver comprehensive situational awareness."

An initial investment of $3.5 million has been allocated to kickstart the project, underscoring the commitment to advancing AI technologies in the realm of geospatial intelligence.

BlackSky, a leader in real-time geospatial intelligence solutions, is renowned for its high-frequency monitoring and analytics services. The company operates a cutting-edge low Earth orbit satellite constellation, optimized for efficient imagery capture, complemented by its Spectra AI software platform for in-depth data analysis and insight generation.
