In a significant development for military satellite communications, Viasat, Inc. (NASDAQ: VSAT) has secured a contract from Northrop Grumman to participate in a pioneering U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) initiative.

The initiative, known as the Defense Experimentation Using Commercial Space Internet (DEUCSI) Call 003 program, or more colloquially as 'Global Lightning,' aims to explore the integration of commercial satellite internet services with military systems to enhance defense communication capabilities.

Northrop Grumman, having received a four-year contract, is tasked with examining how defense contractors and commercial satellite communication (satcom) providers can work together to incorporate space internet services into the U.S. military's operational infrastructure.

A key component of this collaboration involves Viasat providing access to its ViaSat-3 Satellite Communications Network. This partnership will enable military personnel to access high-bandwidth satellite internet connectivity directly from U.S. Air Force (USAF) aircraft or ground vehicles, significantly improving operational communication networks.

Viasat's contribution to the project includes the integration of its ViaSat-3 modem into Northrop Grumman's systems. The modem is designed to comply with open communications standards and IP-protocol standards currently employed by the military, such as OpenAMIP, CMOSS, and SOSA.

The adoption of open standards is a strategic priority for the Department of Defense (DoD), facilitating quicker assimilation of new communications technologies and ensuring that military operations can keep pace with rapid advancements in the industry. The ViaSat-3 modem, noted for its low size, weight, and power (SWaP) characteristics, is capable of seamless integration across a variety of mission systems, promoting versatility and efficiency in military communications.

Victor Farah, Head of Viasat Government Systems, emphasized the strategic importance of the Global Lightning program, highlighting its potential to deliver unprecedented flexibility and agility for military users.

The integration of Viasat's reliable satellite services with the innovative ViaSat-3 modem, optimized for open source standards, is expected to significantly enhance the U.S. military's communications capabilities. Farah expressed enthusiasm about Viasat's role in the program, underscoring the company's commitment to supporting the USAF's defense platforms through cutting-edge communications technology.
