Lockheed Martin (NYSE: LMT), a global aerospace, defense, security, and advanced technologies company, has announced that its Pony Express 2 mission is ready for launch. This mission, originating from Littleton, Colorado, is a self-funded technology demonstration designed to enhance Combined Joint All-Domain Command and Control (CJADC2) capabilities through advanced space technologies.
The Pony Express 2 mission encompasses a pair of 12U Terran Orbital Renegade-class space vehicles, each equipped with four Lockheed Martin payloads. These payloads are tailored to provide a suite of capabilities including a tactical communications system, a Ka-band crosslink and mesh network, precision relative ranging and time synchronization, and a high-end CPU/processor. The integration of these technologies on the small satellites showcases Lockheed Martin's commitment to advancing space-based tactical communication solutions.
One of the key features of Pony Express 2 is its enhanced connectivity, utilizing NASA-standard delay-tolerant, mesh networking. This capability is aimed at ensuring that warfighters remain seamlessly connected, with data being resiliently relayed through a constellation of satellites for direct user access at the tactical edge. Such connectivity is critical in maintaining operational effectiveness in austere and contested environments.
The mission also highlights the autonomous capability through its HiveStar technology. This innovative approach uses a "bid-auction" style for autonomous mission management, significantly reducing the need for satellite operator inputs, thereby increasing resiliency and accelerating decision-making processes. HiveStar technology represents a leap forward in autonomous space asset management, distributing mission tasks based on the availability of space assets.
Furthermore, the SmartSat technology onboard Pony Express 2 introduces mission flexibility by allowing software applications written in almost any programming language to be uploaded to orbiting spacecraft. This "smartphone-like" capability enables edge processing for software-defined missions, offering unprecedented flexibility and adaptability for space operations.
The agile operations of the mission are supported by formation flight algorithms that enable the spacecraft to maintain tight formation using ion propulsion, a method not typically employed for cooperative operations. This advancement demonstrates Lockheed Martin's ability to innovate in spacecraft maneuverability and positioning.
An AI-enabled proactive troubleshooting feature is another highlight of Pony Express 2. This application autonomously monitors spacecraft telemetry, predicting potential failures more quickly than human operators could. Such capability allows for proactive maintenance and issue resolution, enhancing the mission's reliability and operational lifespan.
Scheduled for launch on SpaceX's Transporter-10 rideshare mission no earlier than March 2024, Pony Express 2 is poised to conduct a series of on-orbit demonstrations. Following these demonstrations, the technology will be available to participate in government exercises, further showcasing its capabilities to potential stakeholders.
Maria Demaree, vice president and general manager for Lockheed Martin National Security Space, emphasized the mission's significance, stating, "The Pony Express 2 mission will showcase how we can keep our warfighters connected from space across every domain even in the most austere and contested environments. These technologies will be key to ensuring information superiority and 21st Century Security for our forces and allies."
Pony Express 2 represents the latest effort by Lockheed Martin to demonstrate the maturity of its space technologies. It follows previous self-funded technology demonstrators such as the Electronically Steerable Antenna (ESA) Payload, LM LINUSS, and Pony Express 1. The mission is a stepping stone toward Lockheed Martin's Space-Augmented Joint All-Domain Operations Environment (SAJE), which aims to fully enable and lead the Department of Defense's CJADC2 vision.
