Above: Space Development Corp., has reported the successful testing of its proprietary propulsion control system, a key component for its much-anticipated Prometheus free-flying orbital mission slated for the fourth quarter of 2024. This testing milestone marks a crucial step forward in the mission's development, underpinning Above: Space's commitment to advancing space technology.
The Prometheus project stands as a testament to the company's dedication to innovation and versatility in space technologies. The scalable platform will encompass three regulated voltage rails and provide up to 29W of continuous power, a specification underscoring its robust capabilities. Further enhancing its operational efficacy, Prometheus is designed with an integrated thermal control system and comprehensive bus integration. Additionally, the platform will facilitate efficient communication and data transmission through its well-structured up/down links, ensuring seamless connectivity in space.
Rhonda Stevenson, the Chief Executive Officer of Above: Space, emphasized the significance of this development, stating, "Together with our test partner at NASA, Above: Space successfully validated our proprietary propulsion system which will be used to maneuver our 150U Prometheus payload platform next year." Stevenson's remarks reflect a blend of pride and confidence in the venture, signaling a new era in space technology. She further added, "We plan to be the first mission to offer stabilized micro-g and dynamic environments and already have significant demand from commercial customers in our mission."
The testing phase, conducted at the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center's Flat Floor Facility in Huntsville, utilized a specialized flat surface allowing objects to simulate a frictionless, air-cushioned glide. This facility, historically pivotal in the construction of space shuttles and other space technologies, provided an ideal setting for the tests. The success of these tests at such a renowned location not only validates Above: Space's technology but also strengthens its collaboration with NASA, a giant in space exploration.
Microgravity environments, like those Prometheus aims to stabilize, are increasingly recognized as vital for various applications. They are particularly beneficial in the manufacturing of pharmaceuticals, thin films, and other defense-related technologies, especially as the U.S. intensifies its space-based military capabilities. This focus aligns with the growing interest in utilizing space for both commercial and defense purposes.
Above: Space Development's expertise in creating adaptive and versatile space architectures caters not only to commercial enterprises but also to the U.S. Department of Defense. Their unique approach in combining space flight heritage with a mix of commercial, off-the-shelf, and proprietary technologies allows for rapid deployment of scalable, modular solutions. These solutions offer commercial flexibility and controlled on-orbit defensive maneuvering, positioning Above as a leader in automated, on-orbit platforms aimed at providing "more space in space."
The subsidiary, ABOVE: Orbital, under the umbrella of Above: Space Development Corporation, further extends the company's vision. It focuses on future habitability prospects in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), cislunar space, and beyond, paving the way for new frontiers in space exploration and habitation.
