The Shenzhou 16 astronauts aboard China's Tiangong Sspace Station are set for their first-ever spacewalk, as confirmed by the China Manned Space Agency.

In a recent press statement issued on Wednesday, the agency affirmed that the Shenzhou XVI team, which includes Commander Major General Jing Haipeng, Colonel Zhu Yangzhu, a spaceflight engineer, and Professor Gui Haichao, the science payload specialist for the mission, are in optimal health and preparedness for their upcoming extravehicular venture. Their mission clock, which started ticking upon their arrival at the Chinese space station on May 30, has currently recorded a total of 51 days of successful orbital operations.

The trio of Shenzhou XVI astronauts took over the baton of residency at China's expansive orbital platform from their Shenzhou XV counterparts, who had completed a six-month tenure at the station. The current crew is expected to remain aboard the space station for approximately five months before returning to Earth in November.

This mission is particularly significant as it marks the inaugural flight of China's third-generation astronauts. Furthermore, it carries the distinction of being the first time a Chinese civilian has journeyed into space.

Since their arrival at the space station, Commander Jing and his crew have successfully carried out numerous scientific experiments and tests. Additionally, they have played a crucial role in assisting ground controllers with the oversight of science payload installations outside the station.

During their stay, the Shenzhou XVI crew are tasked with multiple spacewalks, which will involve the installation of equipment and performance of maintenance operations. However, their responsibilities don't stop at spacewalks and scientific endeavors. The team is also entrusted with facilitating the docking and departure of visiting spacecraft, demonstrating new technologies, and providing educational lectures.

As of the present, a total of 12 spacewalks have been conducted by Chinese astronauts. The upcoming spacewalk of the Shenzhou XVI crew will not only add to this tally but also pave the way for more ambitious extravehicular activities and space exploration initiatives in the future.
