NASA's Perseverance Mars Rover took an image on December 18th, 2022, during its 650th day of mission that captured the Mars Helicopter Ingenuity near the base of Jezero Crater's river delta, approximately 1,115 feet (340 meters) away from the rover. The image was captured using the left camera of Mastcam-Z with an RGB color filter and the middle of its seven zoom settings, at a focal length of 63 millimeters.

The Mars Helicopter Ingenuity is a technology demonstration project developed by NASA to test the viability of powered flight on another planet. The helicopter was attached to the Perseverance Rover and made the journey to Mars in 2020, marking the first time a powered aircraft has been sent to another planet. The Ingenuity helicopter's successful flight on Mars on April 19th, 2021, was a historic moment in space exploration and proved that powered flight on another planet is possible.

The Ingenuity helicopter is a small and lightweight vehicle, weighing just 4 pounds (1.8 kg), and is equipped with two counter-rotating blades that spin at over 2,400 revolutions per minute. The helicopter has a range of abilities, including vertical takeoff and landing, and the ability to fly for short distances and capture high-resolution images and data. This data will be used to inform future Mars missions and help advance our understanding of the planet.

The Ingenuity Mars Helicopter is an impressive technological achievement, and its successful flight on Mars has opened up a new frontier in space exploration. NASA will continue to utilize the helicopter to gather data and perform aerial surveys of the Martian terrain

Separately, the Perseverance mission has a significant objective to search for signs of ancient microbial life, as part of its astrobiology mission. The rover will play a crucial role in characterizing the planet's geology and past climate, paving the way for human exploration of the Red Planet. This mission is also the first to collect and cache Martian rock and regolith (broken rock and dust) for future analysis.

NASA is working in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA) to carry out subsequent missions to Mars. These missions will collect the sealed samples from the surface of Mars and return them to Earth for in-depth analysis. The Perseverance Mars Rover mission is a significant step in NASA's Moon to Mars exploration approach, which includes the Artemis missions to the Moon. These missions will help prepare for human exploration of the Red Planet.
