The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research (UFZ)
The Helmholtz Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ
The centre studies the complex interactions between humans and the environment in cultivated and damaged landscapes. The scientists develop concepts and processes to help secure the natural foundations of human life for future generations.
It was established in 1991 and has more than 1,000 employees in Leipzig, Halle/S. and Magdeburg.
The main locations are in Leipzig, Halle and Magdeburg.
GEOSS
The Global Earth Observation System of Systems (GEOSS) will provide decision-support tools to a wide variety of users. It will proactively link together existing and planned observing systems around the world and support the development of new systems where gaps currently exist.
It is being built (in 2012) by the Group on Earth Observations (GEO), on the basis of a 10-Year Implementation Plan running from 2005 to 2015.
GEOSS seeks to connect the producers of environmental data and decision-support tools with the end users of these products, with the aim of enhancing the relevance of Earth observations to global issues. The result is to be a global public infrastructure that generates comprehensive, near-real-time environmental data, information and analyses for a wide range of users.
Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES)
The Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) is an American organisation dedicated to Earth & space science education. It is fostering national & international cooperation in global Earth observations.
Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC)
The Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC), formerly the Space Environment Center (SEC), is a laboratory and service center of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) located in Boulder, Colorado. SWPC continually monitors and forecasts Earth's space environment, providing solar-terrestrial information. SWPC is the official source of space weather alerts and warnings for the United States.
The Space Weather Prediction Center is one of the nine National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) and provides real-time monitoring and forecasting of solar and geophysical events, conducts research in solar-terrestrial physics, and develops techniques for forecasting solar and geophysical disturbances.
The SWPC Forecast Center is jointly operated by NOAA and the U.S. Air Force and is the national and world warning center for disturbances that can affect people and equipment working in the space environment. SWPC works with many national and international partners who contribute with data and observations.
EnerGEO
Earth observation for monitoring and assessment of the environmental impact of energy use.
The EnerGEO project consists of 12 partners from 6 countries and has a duration of 4 years. The project started 1November 2009
Argos System
Argos is a satellite-based system which collects, processes and disseminates environmental data from fixed and mobile platforms worldwide. What makes Argos unique is the ability to geographically locate the source of the data anywhere on the Earth utilizing the Doppler effect.
The Argos system is operated by the French organization CLS.
