Laboratoire d'Astrophysique de Marseille (LAM)

The Laboratoire d’Astrophysique de Marseille (LAM) is a large French space astrophysics laboratory. The LAM is a joint research unit of the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) and Aix-Marseille Université (AMU).

Astrophysics research at LAM covers a broad range of topics, from solar system to cosmology. LAM researchers lead or participate in large observational, data analysis and simulation programs. Thanks to its technical department and modern and well-equipped facilities, LAM also leads or participates in major instrumental programs from national and international agencies (CNES, ESA, ESO, NASA). LAM receives substantial financial support from the Centre National d’Etudes Spatiales (CNES).

The center's mission is to advance knowledge and understanding of the universe through research and education in astronomy and astrophysics.

The center was founded in 1973 as a joint venture between the Smithsonian Institution and Harvard University. It consists of the Harvard College Observatory and the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. The center's main facility is located at Cambridge, Massachusetts, USA. Beyond this location there are also additional satellite facilities elsewhere around the globe.
