Euclid Consortium

The Euclid Consortium (EC) is a European organisation which brings together all laboratories contributing to the Euclid mission, beside ESA. The EC is composed of the teams that imagined, designed and proposed the Euclid mission submitted to the ESA Cosmic Vision program selection.

The main objective is to probe the mysteries of dark energy and dark matter.

Euclid is an ESA medium class mission selected for launch in 2019 in the Cosmic Vision 2015-2025 programme (ESA PR selection ). The main goal of Euclid is to understand the origin of the accelerating expansion of the Universe. To achieve this, it is proposed to build a satellite equipped with a 1.2 m telescope and three imaging and spectroscopic instruments working in the visible and near-infrared wavelength domains. These instruments will explore the expansion history of the Universe and the evolution of cosmic structures with look back time by measuring shapes and red­shifts of galaxies as well as the distribution of clusters of galaxies as function of redshift over a very large fraction of the sky. The satellite will be launched by a Soyuz ST-2.1B rocket and transferred to the L2 Lagrange point for a 6 years mission (see the ESA Euclid mission summary ).

Euclid will address key fun­da­mental cosmological questions:

  • Is dark energy merely a cosmological constant, as first discussed by Einstein, or is it a new kind of field that evolves dynamically with the expansion of the universe?
  • Alternatively, is dark energy instead a manifestation of a break-down of General Relativity and deviations from the law of gravity?
  • What are the nature and properties of dark matter?
  • What are the initial conditions which seed the formation of cosmic structure?

The Australian Space Research Institute (ASRI) is a non-profit organisation run entirely by volunteers. The ASRI was created to provide opportunities for space-related industry and technology development for the Australian technical community.

Most of the work at ASRI is done in collaboration with Australian universities such as the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, Queensland University of Technology and the University of Technology, Sydney.

ASRI is developing a vision for the future of Australia's space community, including industry.

Hainan Space Launch Center

The Wenchang Satellite Launch Center (WSLC), or Hainan Space Launch Center, is a Chinese spaceport under conversion for operations in 2014. It is a former sub-orbital test center, located on the Hainan island, near the city of Wenchang.

It is the fourth and southernmost space vehicle launch facility (spaceport) of China. It has been specially selected for its low latitude, which is only 19 degrees north of the equator, which will allow for a substantial increase in payload, necessary for the future manned program, space station and deep space exploration program. Furthermore, it will be capable of launching the new heavy lift Long-March 5 booster currently under development.

Unlike the Space Centers on China mainland whose rail tracks are too narrow to transport the new five meter core boosters, Wenchang will use its sea port for deliveries.

Initial launches of the CZ-5 booster from Wenchang are expected in 2014, one year after the intended commissioning of the Wenchang Center.

SPACEWAY

The SPACEWAY satellites are communications satellites with capabilities for high-speed data networking, through use of multi-spot-beam antenna and onboard data processing technologies (offering high-capacity Ka-band ).

The SPACEWAY system was originally envisioned as a global Ka band communications system by Hughes Electronics. When the project to build the system was taken over by Hughes Network Systems, a subsidiary of Hughes Electronics, it was transformed into a phased deployment initially only launching a North American satellite system.

SPACEWAY-1, SPACEWAY-2 and SPACEWAY-3 have been launched and Hughes Network Systems has an option to purchase and have Boeing build SPACEWAY-4.
