ESO, European Southern Observatory
European Southern Observatory, is the foremost intergovernmental astronomy organisation in Europe and the world's most productive astronomical observatory. ESO, formally the European Organisation for Astronomical Research in the Southern Hemisphere, is usually known as The European Southern Observatory.
ESO's main mission, laid down in the 1962 Convention, is to provide state-of-the-art research facilities to astronomers and astrophysicists, allowing them to conduct front-line science in the best conditions. The annual Member State contributions to ESO are approximately 198 million euros and ESO employs around 700 staff members. By building and operating a suite of the world's most powerful ground-based astronomical telescopes enabling important scientific discoveries, ESO offers numerous possibilities for technology spin-off and transfer, together with high technology contract opportunities and is a dramatic showcase for European industry.
The ESO Headquarters (comprising the scientific, technical and administrative centre of the organisation) are located in Garching near Munich, Germany. In Chile, ESO operates the Vitacura centre as well as three unique observing sites: La Silla, Paranal and Chajnantor.
ESO is building the 39-metre Extremely Large Telescope, the ELT, which will become “the world’s biggest eye on the sky”.

Astrobiology is the study of the origins, evolution, distribution, and future of life in the universe. This interdisciplinary field requires a comprehensive, integrated understanding of biological, planetary, and cosmic phenomena. Astrobiology encompasses the search for habitable environments in our Solar System and on planets around other stars; the search for evidence of prebiotic chemistry or life on Solar System bodies such as Mars, Jupiter's moon Europa, and Saturn's moon Titan; and research into the origin, early evolution, and diversity of life on Earth. Astrobiologists address three fundamental questions: How does life begin and evolve? Is there life elsewhere in the universe? What is the future of life on Earth and beyond?
NAI's mission is to:
- carrying out, supporting and catalyzing collaborative, interdisciplinary research;
- training the next generation of astrobiology researchers;
- providing scientific and technical leadership on astrobiology investigations for current and future space missions;
- exploring new approaches using modern information technology to conduct interdisciplinary and collaborative research amongst widely-distributed investigators;
- supporting outreach by providing scientific content for K-12 education programs, teaching undergraduate classes, and communicating directly with the public

The company offers expertise in satellite navigation requiring very high accuracy (accuracy of the order of centimeters or even millimeters). The focus of the PosiTim company is to propose a full service portfolio together with support in using high accuracy GNSS software.
These highly expert services use currently the high accuracy GNSS processing software NAPEOS. NAPEOS is developed and maintained at the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) of the European Space Agency (ESA).
NAPEOS software
NAPEOS, the NAvigation Package for Earth Observation Satellites, is a state of the art software system for GNSS data processing providing results with a very accuracy.
NAPEOS is developed and maintained by the European Space Operations Centre (ESOC) of the European Space Agency (ESA). The NAPEOS developments started around 1995. In 2003 the GNSS capabilties started to be added a project that was finished in 2007. After significant testing the navigation support office at ESOC (OPS-GN) started to use the NAPEOS software in January 2008 for all its IGS activities.
A significant number of companies and individuals have been involved in the development of the NAPEOS software. Of course the major part of the GNSS work has been done at the navigation support office (OPS-GN) at ESOC with a special mentioning for the company GMV. GMV has been responsible for major parts of the actual programming of the NAPEOS source code.
At OPS-GN, in ESOC, NAPEOS supports all the activities in the International GNSS Service (IGS), the International DORIS Service (IDS), the International Laser Ranging Service (ILRS), and other international scientific communities. NAPEOS is also used for the routine precise orbit determination (POD) of several LEO missions, e.g., the ESA ENVISAT mission.
NAPEOS allows fully automated, robust, and reliable GNSS processing at very high accuracy levels with processing efficiency.
