Software: Astrophysics Source Code Library

Write a comment

The Astrophysics Source Code Library (ASCL) is a free on-line registry for source codes of interest to astronomers and astrophysicists, and lists codes which have been used in research that has appeared in, or been submitted to, peer-reviewed publications. ASCL entries are indexed by the SAO/NASA Astrophysics Data System (ADS).

It has been founded in 1999 by Robert Nemiroff and John Wallin, takes an active approach to sharing astrophysical source code. ASCL's editor seeks out both new and old peer-reviewed papers that describe methods or experiments that involve the development or use of source code, and adds entries for the found codes to the library. This approach ensures that source codes are added without requiring authors to actively submit them, resulting in a comprehensive listing that covers a significant number of the astrophysics source codes used in peer-reviewed studies.

NGI project

Write a comment

The NGI project  (Near Real-Time Geo-annotated Imagery) is an imaging system for near real-time satellite imagery delivery services. The target is to provide rapidly access to GIS-ready imagery within 10 minutes of transmission to ground.

Leading the NGI project, Spacemetric is coordinating an experienced team from Sweden and the UK that will develop and demonstrate the new technologies during the 18-month project. Partners SSC and Metria bring a wealth of experience from ground station operations and satellite image value-adding respectively.

At the same time, Magellium Ltd brings in-depth experience from satellite mapping systems developed by its parent for French Government agencies.

The project is financed within ESA's GSTP programme and is expected to provide service solutions of high interest in a range of application areas including rapid mapping and media. Use of open service standards, such as OGC, is an important element of the project strategy along with the use of Spacemetric's Keystone Image Management System as a COTS to jump-start the technical development work.

Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous (NEAR)

Write a comment

The Near Earth Asteroid Rendezvous - Shoemaker (NEAR Shoemaker), renamed after its 1996 launch in honor of planetary scientist Eugene Shoemaker, was a robotic space probe designed by the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory for NASA to study the near-Earth asteroid Eros from close orbit over a period of a year. The mission succeeded in closing in with the asteroid and orbited it several times, finally terminating by touching down on the asteroid on 12 February 2001.

On Monday, 12 February 2001, the NEAR spacecraft touched down on asteroid Eros, after transmitting 69 close-up images of the surface during its final descent.

Armadillo Aerospace

Write a comment

Armadillo Aerospace is an aerospace startup company based in Mesquite, Texas, USA.

Armadillo Aerospace is a developer of reusable rocket powered vehicles. Its initial goal is to build a manned suborbital spacecraft capable of space tourism, but it has stated long-term ambitions of orbital spaceflight.

The company is focused on VTVL (vertical takeoff, vertical landing) suborbital research and passenger flights, with an eye towards paths to orbit.

Founded in 2000, we Armadillo Aerospace has an experience base with over two hundred flight tests spread over two dozen different vehicles. The company has flown vehicles at every X-Prize Cup event.

Its initial goal is to build a manned suborbital spacecraft capable of space tourism, but it has stated long-term ambitions of orbital spaceflight.

LISA Pathfinder

Write a comment

LISA Pathfinder is the revised name for SMART-2 or Small Missions for Advanced Research in Technology-2, an ESA/NASA space probe to be launched in 2015.

The aim of the LISA Pathfinder is to test technologies needed for the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna, a joint ESA/NASA gravitational wave detector. It will contain one arm of the LISA interferometer, shortened from 5 Gm (5 million km) to 35 cm.

In particular, it will verify:

  • Drag-free attitude control of a spacecraft with two proof masses,
  • The feasibility of laser interferometry in the desired frequency band (which is not possible on the surface of Earth), and
  • The reliability and longevity of the various components—capacitive sensors, microthrusters, lasers and optics.
